Celebrating IT Excellence at Highland College

Authored by Katie Peach, Head of Operations, Logicalis UK&I.

Logicalis recently presented the Excellence in IT Award at Highlands College for the 5th year running, reaffirming our commitment to fostering the next generation of IT talent.

This annual tradition reflects the relationship shared between the College and our company, a relationship that extends beyond business to community building.

Cultivating passionate young talent

Highlands College serves as a vital feeder for Logicalis; many technology-savvy students who graduate often begin their IT careers with us on the Service Desk. There are members of the Jersey team, such as Paul McAllister, who has worked here for 14 years and is now a Senior IT Consultant for the business. And he started on our Service Desk, just like the next wave of graduates will.

They're also a customer! We're in the middle of a massive project for the College, and many of the people working on that project studied there, so it's a full-circle moment for them. When we visit the site to check on the progress, we sometimes run into their former teachers, and it's clear how proud they are of them. The students they once taught are starting their careers in something they're passionate about.

This year's award went to first-year student Christopher Meyer — it's unusual for a first-year student to win, but it was a unanimous choice by the Faculty at Highlands. Two key factors contributed to their decision:

  • He passed all his classes with a Distinction
  • The initiative he's shown at his part-time job

Christopher picked up a job on the weekends while studying and showed such aptitude with their hardware and software he is helping them with their IT. Stories like Christopher's are what awards like Excellence in IT should represent — passion and curiosity towards technology. Highlands accredited him with the following:

"Throughout the academic year, Christopher has demonstrated exceptional dedication, discipline, and determination. Achieving full distinction in all subjects, he consistently strives to exceed expectations with a commendable work ethic. Beyond academics, he shows remarkable perseverance, a positive attitude, and a strong commitment to supporting his peers. His drive and engagement make him an outstanding student and role model. His tutors had great pride in nominating this student."

It's more than just business; these events matter

Having been born, raised, and educated in Jersey, being involved with these awards at Highlands College holds great significance for me. Taking part in initiatives like this isn't a corporate obligation; it's an authentic and heartfelt commitment to the island's future. Seeing how much the College cares about, and takes pride in, the learning and development of its students is what inspires me to continue supporting them year after year.
