Announcing End of General Support for VMware vSphere 6.5 and vSphere 6.7

United Kingdom, Nov 16, 2022

Upgrade today to maintain support and subscription services Article by Gareth Headley, VCIX – DCV, vExpert, VMware Infrastructure Specialist at Q Associates, a Logicalis company.

VMware has officially declared vSphere 6.5.x (ESXi 6.5) and vSphere 6.7.x (ESXi 6.7) as End of General Support starting from 15th October 2022.

The end of Technical Guidance is 15th November 2023.

These dates are important as organisations need to be formulating their plans to move past VMware ESXi 6.5 and 6.7 to a more current version of VMware vSphere, such as vSphere 7.

What is General Support?

VMware General Support offers support for new hardware and guest OS updates. This includes maintenance updates, bug and security fixes, along with technical assistance. Including the ability to raise Severity 1 support calls.

What is Technical Guidance?

With Technical Guidance, you still have access to the self-help portal from VMware however telephone support is not provided, and you are unable to raise a severity 1 ticket. During Technical Guidance VMware does not offer new hardware support or guest OS updates, security patches or bug fixes.

Upgrading to vSphere 7

To maintain your full level of support and subscription services VMware recommends migrating to vSphere 7.

With the release of VMware vSphere 7, VMware has introduced the most advanced version of vSphere to date. VMware vSphere 7 is a worthy successor to the very stable and fully featured vSphere 6.7 version as it integrates VMware Tanzu in the solution with the ability to run containers natively in ESXI.

Organisations need to carefully assess their current infrastructure environments to determine what other components may need to be upgraded to adhere with interoperability.  This includes VMware products such as SRM, NSX, vRA, vRops, as well as consideration for various hardware platforms such as VxRail and Cisco Hyperflex.

How to avoid the pitfalls of ‘good enough’ IT

In challenging economic times, organisations naturally look to cut back or defer non-essential investment. Where next for Virtualisation?

In its broadest sense, virtualisation can be seen as the progressive freeing up of any computing function – compute, storage, network – from the constraints of its physical infrastructure. So far, virtualisation has been a continuous evolution, from the first virtual machines (VMs) to the world of hybrid cloud, and there is no sign yet of this evolution losing momentum.

The Changing Threat Landscape

The range and impact of Information Security (IS) threats has grown and changed continually over the last 40 years or more, along with the motivations and drivers for such attacks. From when the Morris Worm launched the first, apparently inadvertent, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the internet, the realm of cybercrime has expanded from hackers often driven by little more than curiosity, to organised crime and state sponsorship.
